Residents Call For Greater Safety after Man Dies in Cape Coral Boat Crash

After a man was killed in a boating crash in Cape Coral last week locals to the area are calling for greater boat safety.

WinkNews.com reports that the victim died while apparently traveling at a high rate of speed on a pontoon boat through shallow water. The boat crashed into a tight corner near a residential property. Though a neighbor who was a registered nurse was on the scene within moments of the crash the victim did not survive.

The property’s owner, Spencer Ault, says that “There’s not enough room in a pontoon boat to make such a tight turn at a high speed, so he ended up actually crashing into the piling of my dock.” Police say that there have been more than a dozen calls related to reckless boating in the area over the past 10 years. Locals say that the lake is not large and can turn shallow in different areas.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the man’s death.
