Promising South Florida Teen Killed in Boat Crash
South Florida resident 18-year-old Lucas Alvarez was killed in a boating crash late last week, in what was a tragic end to a promising life.
MiamiHerald.com reports that Alvarez, a senior at Palmetto Bay’s Westminster Christian School, was a passenger in a 23-foot Pathfinder open fisherman vessel when it hit a boat marker. The force of the impact ejected Alvarez and the other passengers from the vessel. Alvarez suffered “trauma to the lower torso,” while the other occupants of the boat, 18-year-olds Nelson Albareda and Andres Campos, were not injured.
Authorities transported Alvarez to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier where he later died. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that it was not clear if speed was a factor.
Miami Herald reports that Alvarez’s school issued a statement saying “It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of senior Lucas Alvarez on Sunday due to a boating accident in the Keys.”
The investigation into the tragedy is still ongoing.
