News: Tow truck driver dies after being struck by multiple vehicles on Florida’s Turnpike
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – A man died after he was struck by multiple vehicles on Florida’s Turnpike near Port St. Lucie early Sunday morning, authorities said.
According to TC Palm, the incident took place in the turnpike’s southbound lanes at mile marker 149 shortly after midnight.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a 57-year-old tow truck driver had parked on the side of the highway and was standing next to his vehicle with the driver’s side door open.
The man was then struck by a southbound sedan driven by a 20-year-old woman from Deerfield Beach. He was thrown into the southbound lanes, where he was run over by three other vehicles. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the sedan that struck the man initially did remain at the scene. She and her passenger were not injured.
State troopers are now searching for the three other vehicles that hit the truck driver, which all fled the scene after the crash. The southbound turnpike was shut down for about eight hours while the area was being cleared and investigated.
