News: Sheriff’s office investigating fatal scooter accident in Central Broward
CENTRAL BROWARD, FL – The Broward County Sheriff’s Office reports it is investigating a fatal scooter accident in unincorporated Central Broward.
The incident took place Friday near the 2800 block of Northwest 15th Court at about 8 p.m.
Investigators said 47-year-old Benjamin Gethers was riding a Riya scooter at the same time that a BMW heading east on Northwest 15th Court pulled into a parking space.
The scooter fell onto its side, slid over the pavement, and came to a final rest. Gethers was thrown from the scooter and struck the pavement, sustaining a head injury.
Gethers, a Fort Lauderdale resident, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he passed away two days later. The sheriff’s office said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The investigation has indicated that the scooter and the BMW did not make contact with each other, and that neither the headlight nor the taillight of the scooter were operational
