News: Man surrenders in NW Miami-Dade crash that killed bicycle rider
MIAMI-DADE, FL – Authorities say a man has surrendered in connection with a crash in northwest Miami-Dade County that killed a bicyclist.
NBC Miami reports 45-year-old Frederick Howard Bailey turned himself in Monday and now faces charges stemming from the incident on Feb. 9, 2020.
The victim, 18-year-old Derek Betancourt, was riding his bike in the area of Northwest 196th Street and Northwest 47th Avenue when he was struck by a Mercedes Benz C300 that left the scene. Betancourt was pronounced dead at the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
A tow truck driver took the Mercedes to a West Park mechanic several days after the crash and said he had transported it from Bailey’s home. Investigators also said cellphone data indicated Bailey was in the area of the crash.
Bailey was jailed on several charges, including leaving the scene of a crash involving death and attempted tampering with physical evidence.
