News: Investigation underway into fatal Key Largo boating accident
KEY LARGO, FL – Officials are investigating a boating accident in Key Largo on Saturday morning that left the driver of the boat dead, according to WPLG.
The victim was identified as 59-year-old Joseph Guenther of Key Largo. According to investigators, he lost control of a 21-foot powerboat while in Blackwater Sound at about 9:30 a.m. The vessel ran into some mangroves before going onto the shoreline.
Guenther was pronounced dead of his injuries on Sunday after being taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. No other injuries were reported.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Division of Law Enforcement said excessive speed by Guenther is believed to have been a contributing factor in the incident, but the agency is continuing to look into the cause of the crash.
