News: Hospital CEO killed in personal watercraft accident in Palm Beach County
PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL – Dr. Leon Haley Jr., CEO of UF Health Jacksonville, died in a personal watercraft accident in Palm Beach County over the weekend, according to WPTV.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Dr. Haley lost control of a Yamaha PWC jet ski Saturday and crashed into a jetty in the Palm Beach Inlet at about 10:30 a.m.
He was ejected from the watercraft and was pronounced dead after being taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Officials said he was wearing a life jacket.
Dr. Haley, 56, was the first Black CEO of UF Health Jacksonville, which released a statement that read in part, “Dr. Haley was a strong, inspirational leader and beloved son, father, friend and colleague. We ask that you keep his family in your prayers and thoughts.”
Dr. Haley was credited with playing an important role in Jacksonville’s battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.
