Cruise Crime Stats Continue to Show Trend of Onboard Sexual Assaults
The most recently released cruise ship crime stats show that sexual assault continues to be the most commonly reported crime aboard cruise ships.
The stats, which are compiled and reported by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), covers July 1, 2018 – September 30, 2018, and includes crimes reported by major cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, and Norwegian.
During the three months covered by the report, the DOT reported the following stats:
- 0 homicides
- 0 suspicious deaths
- 2 assaults with serious bodily injury
- 7 thefts >$10,000
- 21 sexual assaults
As can be seen, the stats for sexual assault account for more than double the reports of all other crimes combined.
Cruise companies have been on notice of the problem for decades, but have yet to make the modifications necessary to change the situation.
