Cruise Companies Continue to Call on Playa del Carmen Despite State Department Travel Advisory
The U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory, warning U.S. citizens to avoid Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The advisory also bans government personnel from going to the area.
A recent ferry explosion in the area hurt more than 20 people. Explosives were found on another ferry a week later, but did not detonate.
The city, which rests on the coastof the Caribbean, has also been the scene of deadly drug cartel activity.
The U.S. Consulate in the area was closed as a result of the State Department’s decision.
Despite the danger of the area, many cruise companies continue to call on the area, putting passengers and crew members in danger.
