Hyundai Recalls More Than 500,000 Vehicles Due to Faulty Airbags – 2 Deaths Reported
Hyundai announced a recall of over half a million of its popular Sonata model automobiles due to defective airbags.
The recall comes on the heels of many national and international airbag recalls which resulted from manufacturing defects of Takata airbags. Those recalls resulted in over 60 million auto recalls and left Takata in bankruptcy.
New York Daily News reports that the Hyundai recall comes after at least four car crashes were reported due to the defect, resulting in two deaths and four injuries. A fifth crash is being investigated.
Unlike the tens of millions of automobiles which have been recalled over the past two years due to Takata airbags, the Hyundai recall did not involve Takata. NY Daily News reports that ZF-TRW supplied both the airbags used in the recalled Sonatas and those installed in approximately 1.4 million vehicles recalled by Fiat Chrysler vehicles in 2016.
