Florida Observes National Safe Boating Week As Boating Crashes Surge

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the state is currently experiencing a rise in boating accidents.

WPTV.com reports that in 2020 FWC recorded the highest number of boating accidents in nine years, coming in at 836 as opposed to the average of 722.

Reportedly, 44% of the boating accidents occurred because the boat operator was not paying attention.

In an attempt to combat the increased boating accidents Florida is observing National Safe Boating Week from May 22-28.

Maj. Rob Beaton of FWC’s Boating and Waterways Section said that the week’s goal is “Reminding people to be safe and slow down is our top priority. Nothing can ruin an enjoyable and memorable experience on the water faster than a boating accident. Life-changing tragedies often happen because individuals choose to operate a boat while distracted or, worse yet, impaired. Those tragedies are preventable.”
