Florida Launches Hit-and-Run Awareness Campaign As Fatalities Climb
In a tragic paradox, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says Florida saw fewer hit-and-run car crashes in 2020 than in 2019 but nevertheless recorded significantly more fatalities in 2020.
News4Jax.com reports that the state is attempting to combat the hit-and-run trend with a new campaign set to launch in February, which is Hit-and-Run Awareness Month. The “Stay at the Scene” awareness campaign is meant to raise drivers’ awareness of the dangers of hit-and-run and the potential penalties.
In Florida, it is a felony to flee from the scene of any car crash which results in property damage, injury, or death. Penalties for breaking the law include prison time and loss of driving privileges.
The report quotes Florida Highway Patrol Director Col. Gene Spaulding as warning drivers “It’s your duty as a driver involved in a crash to remain at the scene and provide assistance to other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians or other parties who have been injured or received property damage. It’s not only the right thing to do, it’s the law.”
