Florida Authorities Advise Motorists to Beware of Fog Following 2012 Deadly Crashes
Florida authorities are advising state motorists to take extreme caution when driving in foggy conditions. Recalling a 2012 incident in which a so-called super fog developed on I-75 in the Gainesville area, Florida officials issued the advisory as large portions of the state again experienced foggy conditions.

WTSP.com reports that during that 2012 incident drivers’ visibility was cut to practically zero due to the fog and smoke from a local fire. The situation resulted in dozens of vehicles slamming into one another on I-75, costing 11 lives and many more injuries.
When driving in extremely foggy conditions Weather.gov says that motorists should:
- Slow down
- Leave more distance between you and the vehicles in front of you
- Avoid using your high beams as they can cause glare and make it more difficult to see what’s ahead of you
- Use your low beams and fog lights if you have them
- In extremely dense fog conditions, when possible, you should turn on your hazard lights and pull off of the road to await more favorable conditions.
