Families of FIU Bridge Collapse Victims Osvaldo Gonzalez and Alberto Ready Wide-Ranging Law Suit
A second lawsuit has been filed in the wake of the bridge collapse at Florida International University last week.
According to Local10.com, the families of victims Osvaldo Gonzalez and Alberto Arias are planning to file a wrongful death suit alleging wide ranging negligence by multiple parties, including MCM, the contractor that constructed the bridge, and the companies that designed and inspected the bridge. The families are also planning to sue Florida International University and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
In the days after the collapse, it was revealed that an engineer who was working on the bridge project contacted FDOT to report the fact the cracks had been spotted in the newly erected structure. FDOT employees reportedly did not review the message until the days after the tragedy stuck.
The bridge, which was supposed to open in 2019, was built using an innovative modular construction method. FIU authorities boasted that the structure was the largest pedestrian bridge of this kind ever to be constructed in the U.S.
Gonzalez and Arias were life partners who had been together for some 21 years. Their families indicated that the lawsuit is ready to file, but that they are waiting until after the funerals.
