Engineering Firm Estimated $9 Million In Repairs Needed to the Champlain Towers Before Collapse
A recent report indicates that the Surfide building that collapsed earlier this week needed at least $9 million in repairs, according to a study issued by a consulting firm.
ABC11.com reports that in 2018 Morabito Consultants issued the cost estimate, citing that the building was supported by a concrete slab that had “major structural damage” and that the building had significant cracking in its columns, beams, and walls in the parking garage.
The consultant’s reports apparently did not indicate that the building was under imminent threat of collapse, and authorities have not concluded that the repairs recommended in the report would have prevented the collapse of the South Tower.
Apparently, at the time of the collapse, none of the recommended repairs had been completed.
Meanwhile, the official death toll has risen from 5 to 9, with over one hundred people still unaccounted for.
