Authorities Charge Boat Captain for Parasailing Crash that Killed Two
Authorities are charging a Key West boat captain in connection with a parasailing crash that killed two people.
The incident occurred in July 2020 when Andrew John Santeiro was piloting a boat operated by Sunset Watersports. Authorities accuse Santeiro of taking 36-year-old Nicholas Hayward of Costa Rica and 26-year-old Azalea Silva of San Antonio, Texas on a parasailing trip, despite the fact that winds in the area were too strong at the time.
After Santeiro launched the tourists, the parasail dropped into the water resulting in Santeiro dragging the couple for several minutes.
Apparently, Santeiro should have known of the dangerous conditions in the area at the time, as TampaBay.com reports that witnesses noticed the boat nearly capsized due to the forces exerted on the parasail.
Authorities are charging Santeiro with manslaughter.
