Deadly Crash As Tractor Trailer Collies with SUV Carrying 25 People
A California crash is serving as a stark warning to Floridians: avoid the temptation to over-crowd into a vehicle.
In a grizzly news report out of Southern California today, reports indicate that an SUV carrying 25 people was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer, killing at least 15 people.
Local10.com reports that the crash occurred at about 6:15 a.m. PT in El Centro, California – about 125 miles east of San Diego. Apparently, the 1997 Ford Expedition pulled onto Norrish road, in front of the oncoming tractor-trailer. The resulting crash killed people ages 20 to 55.
According to the report the Expedition is built to carry a maximum of 8 passengers and 2,000 pounds. The fact that the SUV was filled with so many people indicates that it was likely carrying far more than this maximum weight. This potentially affected the SUV’s ability to steer and stop says Frank Borris, former head of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation
Victims who survived the crash suffered a wide range of injuries from bone fractures to head trauma. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered relatively minor injuries.
