Costa Venezia Passengers Screened for Coronavirus

A day after several cruise lines announced that they would cancel cruises out of China due to fears of the spread of coronavirus, authorities are increasingly worried that the ships’ travels could aide the virus’ transmission.

in an effort to head off the virus officials with Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and Costa Cruises have all canceled sailings out of Shanghai, about six sailings in total.

The Costa Venezia, which returned to Shenzhen port in China this morning, saw medical personally board the ship and check the nearly 5,000 passengers and 1250 crew for signs of coronavirus contagion. Express.co.uk reports that approximately 152 passengers were singled out for further screening including four who exhibited elevated temperatures and 148 who either resided in or had visited Wuhan recently. Wuhan, China is thought to be the epicenter of the coronavirus contagion.

In a statement, Costa said that it is “dedicated to the health and safety of all guests and crew,” and is “strictly monitoring the situation of the so-called ‘Wuhan Pneumonia’ which is causing concern among Public Health Authorities and the traveling public.

Costa has offered passengers of canceled cruises a full refund, or to reschedule for a later date and a $50 onboard credit.
