Another Day Another Cruise Ship Mechanical Issue
The itinerary of a Carnival cruise ship has been altered after the ship reportedly suffered from a mechanical engine issue which affected its maximum speed.
The Carnival Vista, sailing out of Galveston, Texas, is expected to arrive at port a day later than originally planned due to the issue. The ship also significantly modified its itinerary, changing several port of call, reports CruiseFever.net. The changes include stops in Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico.
In a letter, Carnival informed guests of the changes and promised compensation due to the inconvenience. The compensation will reportedly include a $200 onboard credit and a 50% discount off of a future cruise, good through December 12, 2020.Carnival is also offering up to a $200 per person airfare credit.
Mechanical issues frequently strike cruise ships, causing a range of potential difficulties and hazards. On the low end of the spectrum are instances in which cruise companies are forced to change itineraries, such as spending more days at sea and skipping scheduled ports of call.
Other mechanical issues can be more serious and can cause the ships to stop functioning properly. A recent cruise ship collision was blamed on mechanical issues.
On the extreme end of the spectrum cruise ships can become hopelessly stranded at sea and can even catch fire. A Viking Ocean cruise ship suffered mechanical issues in March, stranding the ship in choppy waves. Hundreds of passengers had to be airlifted from the vessel before the ship was finally towed to safety by tugboats.
