Volvo Announces Massive Auto Recall Following Airbag-Related Death
Automaker Volvo is recalling over 400,000 vehicles worldwide due to a defect in the vehicles’ airbags that can cause severe injury and death.
CNBC.com reports that Volvo is recalling 460,769 vehicles, including 2001-2006 S80 models and 2001-2009 S60 models. The report indicates that over half of these vehicles were sold in the United States.

Volvo is issuing the recall after at least one airbag ruptured, killing an occupant of the vehicle. Apparently, the Volvo airbags suffer from a similar defect as Takata airbags, which were subject to the largest auto recalls in history. The Takata airbags could cause them to essentially explode and pepper the vehicle’s occupants with shrapnel.
Like the defect in the Takata airbags, Volvo has said that moisture can cause the airbag inflator mechanisms to malfunction, causing the airbags to inflate too rapidly.
