Topeka Kansas Man Sentenced to 12 Years For Cruise Ship Murder of His Girlfriend
A Kansas court has sentenced a Topeka man to 12 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend aboard a Carnival cruise ship.
FoxNews.com reports that in December 2019, 55-year-old Eric Duane Newman pleaded guilty to one count of murder in the second degree. He had been accused of killing his girlfriend Tamara Tucker during a January 2018 cruise aboard the Carnival Elation out of Jacksonville, Florida.
As the ship sailed approximately 30 miles off the coast of Florida Newman and Tucker reportedly began arguing in the early morning hours. Newman admitted to attacking Tucker, strangling her and then pushing her over the cabin room balcony railing. Tucker fell 2 stories to a deck below and died from blunt force trauma.
After release from prison Newman must serve an additional five years of post-release supervision. He must also pay $8500 in restitution to Tucker’s family, the report indicates.
