Tesla Bucks Recall Norms – Issues Over-the-Air Software Update
Automaker Tesla has come under governmental scrutiny for its Autopilot software which can allow Tesla vehicles to drive autonomously. After a series of high-profile crashes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into the software.
Now in a first-of-its-kind move, Tesla has updated the software through an over-the-air broadcast as opposed to the more traditional method of bringing the vehicles in to update the software manually.

AutoNews.com reports that Tesla issued the update to affected vehicles in September. The fix is meant to help the vehicles’ Autopilot system better handle crash scenes. The move comes in light of an NHTSA investigation into whether the Autopilot system caused multiple crashes, including several which resulted in fatalities.
Despite the NHTSA’s requests for information from Tesla the automaker reportedly has not responded but instead initiated the update unilaterally.
The NHTSA has the authority to order Tesla to recall the vehicles, but as of yet, has not done so.
