Scaffolding Collapse Leaves Two Workers Imperiled
A Miami-area scaffolding collapse left two workers clinging for their lives Friday.
WSNV.com reports that the incident occurred at 3 Island Ave., on the Venetian Causeway at about 10 a.m. The scaffolding had been erected on the side of a residential building where the workers were working when it suddenly collapsed.
“The scaffolding was hanging by one side. The two guys who were on it were hanging by their safety harnesses up against the building,” WSVN quoted a witness as saying. Another person, Jim Clearwater, dialed 911 after hearing a noise and seeing the scaffolding coming down “out of control.”
The 7SkyForce HD helicopter was on the scene as rescue workers responded to the scene. It took about 40 minutes for the team to rescue the men. Both survived the incident without major injury.
In a statement Coast to Coast General Contractors Inc., the company overseeing the construction, said that it believes a lift motor stopped suddenly and the other motor, contrary to design, failed to stop.
