The report indicates that the NHTSA is conducting a broad review of Tesla’s Autopilot system and that the investigation into the May 12 crash is part of that investigation. The agency is apparently concerned with the safety of the system, which can drive Tesla vehicles semi-autonomously.
Since 2016 the NHTSA has looked into over two dozen crashes in which vehicle autopilot systems were either engaged or believed to have been engaged. The majority of the crashes involved Tesla vehicles but other manufacturers, such as Volvo and Cadillac, have also implemented automatic driving systems. In all, the crashes under investigation have left 15 people dead and another 15 injured.
