News: Suspect arrested in deadly hit-and-run crash in Lauderdale Lakes
LAUDERDALE LAKES, FL – Authorities have announced an arrest in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in Lauderdale Lakes last weekend.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said 30-year-old Darren Fertil has been taken into custody on multiple charges. The accident happened shortly after midnight Saturday in the vicinity of West Oakland Park Boulevard and Northwest 46th Avenue.
Investigators said Fertil, driving a Honda, failed to yield to the right of way while trying to make a turn onto Northwest 46th Avenue. His vehicle struck an Audi driven by 19-year-old Marcus Dyland Hemans of Fort Lauderdale.
Hemans’ hit a tree and then was redirected, coming to a rest back on the roadway. Hermans was pronounced dead later at Broward Health Medical Center.
The sheriff’s office said Fertil fled the scene on foot but was later tracked down at a nearby apartment complex. He now faces numerous charges in the case, including DUI with damage to property or person, DUI second offense, and failure to remain at an accident involving death.
