News: More victims found as search resumes at site of collapsed Surfside condo
SURFSIDE, FL – Three more victims were found in the rubble of Champlain Towers South in Surfside after the search resumed late Sunday night at the collapsed condominium, according to NBC Miami.
Rescue crews went back to work after the remaining part of the structure was demolished with the use of explosives. The additional discoveries raised the confirmed death toll to 27, with over 115 people still unaccounted for.
The controlled demolition allowed rescuers to gain access to an area of the site they had been unable to reach before. But Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava cautioned that hopes were fading of finding anyone still alive in the wreckage. “We understand that families realize the fact that time has gone by, they realize that the chances are growing all dimmer,” she said.
One focus of the search is the building’s underground garage area, as crews look for any voids that might still be found.
Officials decided to demolish what was left of the structure on Collins Avenue due to concerns it could fall and put the search-and-rescue crews at risk and restrict areas they could work in. The approach of Tropical Storm Elsa and its strong winds also played a part in the decision.
Nearby residents were warned to stay indoors with their windows closed as the building was being brought down.
