News: Man dead, woman injured after van plunges into water off Florida’s Turnpike
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL – A motor vehicle accident in Miami-Dade County last week left a man dead and his mother hospitalized, NBC Miami reports.
The accident occurred along the Florida’s Turnpike near Southwest 8th Street Friday morning at about 11:30 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of a Toyota van was trying to exit the turnpike when he lost control of the vehicle. The van overturned and plunged into water.
The driver, identified as Mario Laza, was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.
Police officers, divers and a Good Samaritan all helped rescue Laza’s mother from the water. Identified by friends as 80-year-old Nieves Matos, she was hospitalized in critical condition.
