News: Driver killed in collision with Coconut Creek police officer
COCONUT CREEK, FL – A driver was killed in a collision with a Coconut Creek police officer early Sunday morning, authorities said.
NBC Miami reports police and rescue crews were dispatched to the scene in the area of West Sample Road and Lyons Road at about 4 a.m. Investigators determined that a police officer driving a marked Ford Explorer and the driver of a Toyota Camry were both headed west on West Sample Road when the Toyota driver rear-ended the police car in a sideswipe style collision.
The Toyota driver lost control and the vehicle crashed into a tree before ending up in the westbound lanes of the roadway. The driver was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital. She was identified as 30-year-old Divinity Cureton of Pembroke Pines. The police officer was treated at the hospital and released.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the incident at the request of the Coconut Creek Police Department.
