News: Driver, 18, killed in multi-vehicle accident in Deerfield Beach
DEERFIELD BEACH, FL – A teenage driver was killed in a multi-vehicle accident in Deerfield Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release.
BSO deputies and rescue crews responded to the scene on West Hillsboro Boulevard near Deer Creek Boulevard Saturday morning just after 1:45 a.m.
Investigators determined that 18-year-old Denis Haikin of Boca Raton was driving a Mazda MX-5 west on West Hillsboro Boulevard when he lost control of the vehicle. The Mazda struck a Toyota Scion that was also headed west driven by 19-year-old Nick Haikin of Boca Raton.
Both vehicles slid across the westbound lanes, onto the curbed swale and into a concrete utility pole. The impact caused the Mazda to roll onto its roof. After the initial collision, a BMW driven by 22-year-old Gerardo Cadagan of Coral Springs struck the Mazda. Denis Haikin was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said Cadagan walked back to the scene and reported his involvement in the crash.
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
