News: Child killed, 2 others injured in hit-and-run crash on Florida’s Turnpike
BROWARD COUNTY, FL – A driver left the scene of a fatal crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Broward County early Wednesday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to WPLG, a Volkswagen Passat was stopped in a northbound lane of the turnpike near Griffin Road without its lights on at about 12:30 a.m. The driver of a northbound Mercedes-Benz GLE crashed into the back of the Passat, causing it to spin across two lanes, hit a guardrail and end up on the outside shoulder.
A child in the back seat of the Passat was pronounced dead at the scene. The Passat driver, a 37-year-old woman, and a man sitting in the front passenger seat were hospitalized with what were described as incapacitating injuries. It was not yet clear why the Passat was stopped on the inside travel lane.
The FHP said the man driving the Mercedes left the scene after the wreck and was reportedly carrying a baby with him.
Anyone with further information on the incident was asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers.
